David G. Vickers

I was born in rural Michigan in 1948 and raised in the countryside. There is little that can better prepare an artist’s sensibility than wandering as a child through the wonders of nature in all seasons of the year. I currently live, teach, and paint in the Washington D.C. area.

I first began making serious art at Central Michigan University, from which I received a BA in 1971, summa cum laude. In 1969 I was honored to receive the University’s first undergraduate commission for a public sculpture. As I have evolved into a painter, I have enjoyed opportunities to paint landscapes amid the natural beauty of places like Provence, New Mexico, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and my adopted home of Virginia. In addition to landscapes, I am constantly exploring new ways to paint in my studio. I have participated in numerous juried exhibitions in the Mid-Atlantic Region and I’ve twice been a guest artist at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School For The Arts. I began offering my landscapes through Foxhall Gallery in Washington D.C. in 1998.

Art Therapist

I received a Master’s Degree in art therapy from The George Washington University in 1984 and went on to pursue a career in art therapy for the next eleven years. Working in a psychiatric hospital and in the public schools with children and adolescents was both challenging and enriching. Engaging children in healing through art strengthened me not only as a therapist but as an educator and as an artist.

I launched my teaching career as I completed my BA in 1971 by serving in the Methodist Church’s Home Missionary Program. I served in South Carolina and at an experimental alternative high school in Pittsburgh where multidisciplinary collaboration was a core attribute.

I returned to teaching in 1999 by accepting an art education position at Lowell School, a nationally recognized progressive independent school in Washington D.C. I am proud to be a member of Lowell’s skilled and dedicated team of professionals, contributing to the school’s uniquely challenging and supportive child-centered learning environment.

Interiors Consultant

From 1995 through 2000 I owned and operated a multi-disciplinary interiors business, providing a variety of services including design consultation, carpentry, and general contracting. I now find that my experience with interiors informs my painting. I create art with an eye to enhancing people’s homes and businesses.
